Apple Store - Fifth Avenue

The Apple Store on Fifth Ave opens this Friday. If the store on Prince Street is any indication of the shopping experience at this newer store, you should expect a store full of has-beens checking their e-mail on overpriced computers and a staff composed of pomade wearing eunuchs.

Except now you can add a tourist element: I'll shop on-line.

  • Awfully ritzy location for a computer store. Annual retail rent on that block is $1,000 per square foot.

Then again, I suppose Apple isn't really selling computers as much as it is style.

  • When Niketown opened there was an article in the Times which explained that the store was not expected to make money. Maybe the Apple store will have displays of computers used by the rich and famous.

  • A lot of retailers on that stretch have stores in that location just for the exposure. They see the high rent (and the possibility that the store will lose money) as just a cost of doing business, akin to a marketing expense.

  • In New York you can never be sure who the marketing is aimed at. Target had an ad campaign in New York about 10 years ago. They had billboards in Penn Station and movie theater ads.

At the time the only had one store in the Metro area. I think it was in Menlo Park.

The advertising was really aimed at the financial services and advertising industries.
