William F. Buckley Has Emphysema

William F. Buckley: Is there a solution?: "I was there in search of a diagnosis for my shortness of breath, and a dozen tests and examinations confirmed that the problem is emphysema and, oh yes, the cause of it was smoking."
His son also wrote Thank You for Smoking. Interesting and blunt.

  • ALS is an interesting comparison to emphysema. Because nobody knows what causes ALS a person doesn't have to deal with the idea that it's his own damn fault. My dad died of ALS. He was 5'8" and weighed 150 his whole adult life in spite of having been a fat kid. He quit smoking when he was 25. He didn't drink much. He must have earned the nickname "one beer Jack" somehow. He bicycled and X-C skied. But ALS got him when he was 71.

As Rosanne Roanadana said, "It just goes to show you there's always something."
