Initial thoughts on the iPhone

The iPhone is out! I guess they made some kind of deal with Cisco, who owns the iPhone moniker.

I think it's generally good, but it's not perfect. I'll wait for version 2.0.

The good:
  1. The web browser is just cool. The way you can flip the phone different ways is really neat.
  2. The user interface is nice and I think people will really like it.
  3. The dimensions are great if the site is accurate, which it might not be: it looks huge on the site.
  4. 4g or 8g: nice.
  5. WiFi is cool, but mainly for syncing to iTunes, i imagine.
  6. Movies on your phone seems fun.
The bad:
  1. No support for Exchange syncing (except through IMAP, which most organizations disable), so it's a no-go for most corporate users
  2. EDGE? Give me a break. This is a multimedia phone. Cingular has a 3G network now. The blackjack supports it, why can't the iphone?
  3. It doesn't look like you can buy stuff from iTunes with the phone, and why would you with crappy EDGE?
  4. iTunes only. None of your own content unless you convert stuff. I know, this is to be expected, but I'm still going to complain.
  5. Battery life looks weak city. 5 hours advertised; you can trim that down to 4. That's not even close to a whole day. Since this is your phone, you need it to last a full day, or you have to be literally surrounded by chargers to make this thing even safe (think about it, if you find yourself without a phone in certain situations, you're screwed). This is a major weakness.
So it's another device that tempts me badly, but just won't do the trick. My Blackjack doesn't even try to do most of the things that the iPhone does, but at least it has 8-9 hours of e-mail intensive battery life and more if you just phone it.
